Tyco Fire Protection vs. PPE: You Don't Have to Choose—But You Do Have to Plan

  • If you have a fire risk from oxygen, fuel, or hot work, invest first in Tyco fire protection products—extinguishers, suppression, detection.
  • If you have workers on ladders, around heavy objects, or in cold conditions, invest first in PPE—Klein hard hats, Carhartt insulated coveralls, and the right gloves and eye protection.
  • If you're running a facility where both risks exist—which is most of them—you need both, but you should build the active fire protection into the facility and PPE into the task-specific work procedure.

Don't buy a Tyco fire extinguisher for every corner and then hand out cheap hard hats that don't meet ANSI Z89.1. And don't buy premium PPE while ignoring a missing smoke detector on the ceiling.

Bottom Line

I started with a story about a worker disconnecting a smoke detector without killing the breaker. The real lesson wasn't about electrical safety. It was about the gap between what we often assume PPE does and what active fire protection does.
