Most purchasing advice is backwards. It tells you to collect three quotes, compare unit prices, and pick the lowest number. After two incidents like that, I built a cost calculator and made it a precondition for procurement approvals. Not because I'm obsessed with spreadsheets. The conventional wisdom says keep the process simple. My experience after 200+ orders says the process has to be simple enough to follow but detailed enough to catch the difference between price and cost. Those are not the same number.

That's why I'd rather make a few wrong calls on the side of "uncovering the full cost" than spend six more years cleaning up after lowest-price selections.
So, yes, calculate the total cost. Read the manual. Check the substantiation. Ask what happens after the sale. Learn whether a blinking red light means "fine" or "failed." And when someone asks why you didn't take the cheapest quote, tell them the cheapest price was just the first installment.
