I Inspect Tyco Fire Protection Systems for a Living: Verify the Supply Chain, Not Just the Brand

That number changed my mind about something I used to take for granted: the brand name on a safety product matters less than the traceability behind it.
A smoke detector can look entirely genuine and still fail functionally. A pepper spray can have premium packaging and weak concentration. The difference is almost always whether somebody actually verified the product and its supply chain—not which logo is printed on the box. The vendors who pushed back on requests for data—who insisted "within industry standard" should settle the question—were the ones we kept finding deviations in. It took me about three years and 600+ inspections to fully trust that pattern.
One story sticks with me. In 2023, a batch of smoke detectors arrived with sensitivity test reports that didn't match the serial number ranges we'd ordered. The vendor called it an admin mix-up. We rejected the whole lot, because we couldn't verify whether those units had actually been tested. The vendor redid it at their own cost, including shipping. People assume the Tyco name on the product is the only proof they need. It isn't. This is the question I get most often from facility managers: "We put in a fresh battery, pressed the test button, and it's still chirping. The detector must be dead." It probably isn't. Smoke detectors carry residual charge in their internal circuits, even when the battery is removed. If the new battery goes in too quickly, the old circuit state persists—and so does the chirping. I want to be honest about the limits of what I do. Product quality inspection is not the same as system design. If you're installing a commercial fire suppression system or a networked alarm panel, you need licensed professionals who know current local codes. NFPA 72 gets updated periodically, and fire alarm requirements vary by jurisdiction. Verify the current edition with your local authority before designing around any specific requirement.
Regulations also vary for pepper spray from state to state. What's legal in one place can get you into trouble in another. Quality verification doesn't replace knowing local rules.
And one final caveat: not every specification deviation is a supplier failure. In custom fabrication, legitimate deviations come up. A good supplier documents them, gets engineering sign-off, and tells you exactly what changed and why. The problem is never the deviation itself. It's the one that gets hidden.
